The Remains of the Day - 3.23.2009

At some point on Monday, I took the kids to Dairy Queen. Connor got his standard order - a small vanilla ice cream cone. I didn't get a picture of it, but you can imagine what it looks like. It's an ice cream cone with vanilla soft serve ice cream in it. Connor ate half and I let Shadow eat the rest. Ian got his usual order as well - an 8 piece order of chicken fingers. Ian loves breaded chicken from DQ, McDonald's, and Rooster's but won't touch chicken from Wendy's or any Mexican restaurant. Ian ate half of his DQ chicken right away and then saved the rest in the fridge for later. Pictured are the remaining chicken fingers that he had for dinner.

Spring Break Day 2 - 3.24.2009

I didn't get pictures of everything that we ate yesterday. Ian's toast, Connor's cereal, my hard boiled eggs, and the horrible pizza that we ate at Galaxy Games and Golf didn't seem photo-worthy.

Connor, Ian, and I love the show Man Versus Food on the Travel Channel. For those who haven't seen it, it features a guy who goes from city to city and eats a lot of food and tries to beat food challenges. Last night we watched him eat 17 chili dogs and 3 huge sandwiches each with a 1/2 pound of meat and topped with cole slaw and french fries. There is a point to my rambling... Ian decided while watching the show that he would complete his own challenge. He challenged himself to eat 4 chocolate ice cream cones and he won (no surprise there).
Ian after ice cream cone # 2

Ian eating ice cream cone # 4. He was getting a little worn out by this point but buckled down and finished the ice cream cone.

Tony and I had grilled chicken, steamed broccoli, and baked potatoes for dinner. Shadow, my wonderful dog, had grilled chicken and dog food.

FYI - There is a new episode of Man Versus Food on the Travel Channel tonight at 10 PM!

Spring Break, Day 1 - 3.23.2009

The kids are on spring break this week. Unfortunately, we aren't going on vacation anywhere and there won't be any pictures of exciting vacation foods.

We are already through breakfast and lunch. I won't be posting pictures of Ian's lunch because he had toast with Smart Balance. Again. If I posted a picture of every piece of toast that Ian consumes, the blog would be 90% pictures of toast.

Ian started his day with a handful of Starburst Fruit Chews. He prefers the yellow and oranges ones and left the pink and reds ones on the floor, presumably for a late night snack.

Connor had a big bowl of Frosted Flakes for breakfast (aka "Tiger Cereal"). Buying Frosted Flakes in bulk is yet another that I belong to Sam's Club.

Here is one of Connor's favorite meals - black beans simmered with sea salt, garlic, and cumin, with a side of Mexican blend cheeses.

Dinner - 3.22.2009

I made homemade pizza last night using frozen bread dough for the crust. I rolled the crust thin and baked in on a pizza stone. Tony's half had pepperoni and cheese and my half was just cheese. I thought that it turned out great (although it looks pretty gross in this picture). Tony told me that the crust needs to be a little thicker next time and the sauce needs more "tang". He also told me that if I don't comply with these two requests that he will start leaving negative reviews of my cooking on this blog. I told him that he was lucky that I cook for his ungrateful ass and that he could leave all of the negative comments that he wants on here. I'll just delete them.

Connor and Ian's Dinner/Lunch 3.22.2009

Okay, It's about time that I admit that we don't really have "meals" in our house. It's typically just a series of snacks... And keeping with that tradition, here is what Connor and Ian ate around 4 PM EST today.

Connor had Eggo waffles with Smart Balance and syrup (ERIN FOY - Please note my precise cutting technique!) and Ian had whole wheat toast with... you guessed it! Smart Balance!

Sunday Lunch with the Stewarts 3.22.2009

It's a lazy Sunday at the Stewarts... The kids are tired because they had a sleepover at my grandmother's and stayed up late. I got a great night of sleep, but went on a long hike with my brother and our dogs and didn't feel much like cooking when I got home.

Connor wanted Kraft Mac & Cheese for lunch, which is one of my favorite foods so I was happy to fix this delicacy for him. As soon as I put the water on to boil, he changed his mind and asked for a Kid Cuisine. Kid Cuisine is the lowest form of frozen food that you can buy, but they have a heavy marketing presence on Nick Jr. and the Cartoon Network so Connor requests them from time to time. Today he decided to try the cheese stuffed crust pizza with corn and pudding for the first time. He got one bite in to it and told me that he couldn't eat it. I tried one bite and also found it not fit for humans. Or animals. Nothing should be forced to eat this. While I was microwaving the Kid Cuisine, I was also heating a can of Campbell's Healthy Request Wedding Soup on the stove. I ate the soup. It was good. I really liked it.

After Connor's attempt to eat the Kid Cuisine meal, he decided that Cool Ranch Dorito's would be a better lunch. I can't blame him. Who doesn't like Cool Ranch Dorito's?

Ian asked for Pez for lunch, but we were out. He then asked for an apple. I gave him a sliced apple and he proceeded to lecture me for cutting the apple in to 8 slices. Stupid me, I didn't read his mind to know that he wanted his apple HALVED not SLICED. Anyway, he ate the apple but I forgot to get a picture of it. He then proceeded to fix himself a Sam's Club sized bag of On The Border tortilla chips.

Dinner Out 3.21.2009

I have no idea what my kids ate for lunch or dinner last night. They spent the afternoon and the night at my grandmother's house. They probably ate popsicles and Doritos all day. That's fine with me so long as I they are all in one piece and free of broken bones and stitches when I pick them up later today.

Tony and I decided to go to My Big Fat Greek Kuzina for dinner last night. Tony's not a fan of "ethnic" foods (Greek, Mexican, Indian, Chinese, etc.), so I was really surprised when he actually suggested eating here. The food was great. And cheap!

Leave it to Tony to go to a Greek restaurant and order a Ceasar salad. He said that it was the best Ceasar salad that he had ever had. I tasted a couple bites and it was really good. The dressing tasted homemade and was heavy on the anchoives. Yummy!

The menu at this place is huge and everything sounded good. I was trying to stick to something that was remotely reasonable in Weight Watchers points (i.e. high in fiber and high in protien), so I ordered falafel on a bed of lettuce with hummus on the side. I love falafel and hummus. There is nothing more disappointing than having half-assed, poorly prepared, or bland hummus or falafel. Okay, there are plenty of things more disappointing than bad falafel and hummus - but for the purposes of this post... You know what I mean. Anyway, both were fabulous and rich in flavor.

Tony surprised me again but ordering a Lamb gyro. After 9 years of marriage, I had no idea that he liked lamb. He also got french fries covered in feta cheese and some sort of yogurt based sauce. I tried bites of both and they were both great.

More good stuff... BEER! I don't drink beer very often but a good draft beer seemed to fit the meal. I started with a draft Stella and then had a bottled Efes Dark. Efes is a Turkish beer. It's dark, but easy to drink with just enough bite. I think that Tony had a Blue Moon draft beer.

Stewart Family Breakfast. 3.21.2009

My husband, my kids, and I are all picky eaters to some degree. Connor doesn't eat much meat, Tony only eats meat, I don't eat red meat, and Ian lives on chicken nuggets and Gogurt. Breakfast is a rare meal that we all eat together. Granted, Ian only eats the toast and Connor only eats the bacon and I'll only eat turkey bacon... but it's about the closest that we come on agreeing on a single meal. The only meal that we can agree on is White Castle. We all love White Castle, for obvious reasons... White Castle is awesome.

Getting ready to cook breakfast... 5 more reasons that I have a Sam's Club Membership: Large quantities of whole wheat bread, eggs, turkey bacon, bacon, and Smart Balance.

Ian's breakfast... He eats his whole wheat toast in pairs, heavy on the Smart Balance spread. He had 4 slices of toast this morning. And three packs of Pez, but I didn't get a picture of the Pez.

Tony's breakfast. Three eggs over easy and bacon. I had two eggs over easy, 3 slices of turkey bacon, and a piece of whole wheat toast. That's only 6 Weight Watchers points for those of you who are counting. Connor had a plate of bacon for breakfast.

Tony is surprisingly supportive of this new blog. He made sure to let me get a picture before he grabbed his plate off of the counter. He even advised that I move the plate a little to the left so that it had full sunlight on it, making for a better picture.

Ian's Lunch. He Also Had The Same Thing For Dinner. 3.20.2009

Another reason that we have a Sam's Club membership is that they sell 4.1 pound boxes of Goldfish for $7.48. Goldfish are a staple in Connor and Ian's diet. Today Ian had large quantities of Goldfish and Gogurt for both lunch and dinner.

I don't have a picture of Connor's dinner to post because he ate at a birthday party tonight. He tells me that he had 10 squares of cheese and pepperoni pizza to eat while at Ten Pin Bowling Alley for Rainey's 8th birthday.

Tony's Dinner/Snack 3.20.2009

This looks like raw bacon but it isn't. It is prosciutto. Don't let this one food item fool you, Tony's style is more pork rinds than champagne. Although he doesn't actually eat pork rinds... but I am sure that you see where I am going with this.
